Energy density strategies presented at ICCT 2025

On 20-24 July 2025, Joao Coutinho and Murilo Alcantara from CICECO at University of Aveiro took part in ICCT2025 l 27th IUPAC International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics in Porto, Portgual.

ICCT 2025 focuses on applied thermodynamics and one of CICECO’s presented studies was related to the use of thermodynamic strategies to increase energy density of electrolytes in battery applications.

In their presentation entitled “Strategies to increase energy density of batteries”, they showed a total of six strategies that could be applied to raise energy density via the increase of redox active species' solubility in electrolytes. Three of the strategies focus on modifications of molecular structure, such as induction of asymmetry. The other three spotlight modifications on the solvent, such as addition of salt or co-solvent.
